Things I Love About Winter
Firstly, I have to say upfront that Winter is my least favourite season as I can openly declare that I am a somewhat solar-powered individual. This is why I have been inspired to create this post, as I need to remind myself each and every year about all of the good things about Winter so that I can concentrate on these and not on the cold, howling wind, the sleet and hail, and the layers and layers of clothes I need to wear to stay warm…well you get the picture!
So while I look out the window at the last of the red leaves clinging to the grapevines, and my cold and naked peach and lilac trees, I turn my thoughts to these very special things…
Breakfast by the open fire at Koukla, Daylesford (Usually a Greek Omelette and lemongrass / ginger tea - YUM).
Enjoying a glass of red wine with my husband and friends by the fire while watching the football on a Sunday afternoon, sometimes at home, and sometimes at The Farmers Arms Hotel.
Cold mornings rugged up in bed with my husband, singing songs with our son while he dives on the piles of doona.
Mulled wine with cinnamon, cloves and other sublime spices, hot toddies with honey and lemon.
Snow. I love it and it looks magical when it falls.
Bonfires…
Cooking, cooking, cooking. Slow-cooked lamb shanks in red wine and tomato, roast dinners, Indian curries, country style soups and stews, and beautiful fresh bread. (The pot below is full of fresh roma tomatoes that our friends grew in their greenhouse and only ripened 3 weeks ago! I made a big pasta sauce and bottled it up for them, and of course saved some for us.)
Spending the day inside painting while it’s cold and raining outside…this is what I plan to do this weekend for my commission piece.
If i get time, I love to sit by the fire, watch Midsomer Murder and knit very rustic blankets (and I mean rustic as I am not very good at it).
And of course…I love having even more excuses to enjoy pots and pots of beautiful teas and tisanes. Heavenly.
So the more I think about it, the more I can embrace Winter and enjoy it for what it brings. A time to recharge, a time to nurture myself and my family, a time to rest, cook and perhaps even indulge a little.
